George Robert Billings

October 31, 1938 — August 24, 2017

George Robert Billings, age 78, resident of Somerville and husband of Gladys Kopp Billings, died Thursday morning, August 24, 2017 at his residence.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Billings were conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Pleasant Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the Mudville Community. The officiating ministers were Rev. Matt Cunningham and Dr. Clinton Buck. Interment followed in the Pleasant Union Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.

George grew up in the Mudville community and attended Rosemark Elementary and graduated from Bolton High School. He worked at Associated Distributors and later at Firestone & Rubber. He retired from Grose Fire Protection. He attended Pleasant Union Cumberland Church and had been an elder and recently a member of Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He and his wife, Gladys of 58 years, always enjoyed trips and sought out gardens and parks. After retiring, he loved growing flowers. His interests included growing vegetable gardens each year, hunting, fishing, electrical work, carpentry and collecting Chevrolet models of trucks and cars. He enjoyed sitting on the back porch watching the many birds and butterflies that gathered. This was a great pleasure for him as well as his love for his family.

Mr. Billings is survived by his wife, Gladys Kopp Billings of Somerville, TN; three daughters, Karen Vanstory (Mike) of Braden, TN, Daphne Grose (Mike) of Saulsbury, TN, Cyndi Pulliam (Brad) of Somerville, TN; his son, Kerry Billings (Dennena) of Braden, TN; his sister, Truman Sharp of Bartlett, TN; eight grandchildren, Brett Vanstory (Shirley), William Vanstory (Whitney), Cody Grose, Chelsie McKelvey (Jake), Denton Pulliam (Jamison), Britney Ebersold (Tyler), Pedan Craig, Landen Billings; and six great-grandchildren, Landen Vanstory, Hadley Vanstory, Cooper McKelvey, Hardy Ebersold, Bradley Ebersold and Cason Pulliam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred George Billings, Sr. and Ethel Truman Vaughn Billings and his brother, Fred George Billings, Jr.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Brett Vanstory, William Vanstory, Cody Grose, Denton Pulliam, Landen Billings and Landen Vanstory. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Vanstory, Brad Pulliam, Phil Vaughn, Herman Ray Williams, Emerson Brown and Mike Grose.
