George Alfred Filgo

November 2, 1929 — April 3, 2012

George Alfred Filgo, a native of Tupelo, Mississippi, U. S. Navy Veteran, and retired from the transportation industry died Wednesday evening, April 3, 2012 at the Memphis Veteran’s Medical Center. He was 82 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Filgo will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 10th at the West Tennessee State Veteran’s Cemetery. Personal remarks and reflections of Mr. Filgo’s life will be given by family members. Arrangements are provided by the Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Filgo was born November 2, 1929 in Tupelo, Mississippi, the son of the late Joe J. Filgo and the former Bessie O’Shields.  He was educated in the Tupelo Public School System and served in the United States Navy as a Yeoman Third Class during the Korean War period.

Mr. Filgo was a resident of Memphis for much of his life and had been associated in the trucking industry for over 46 years before his retirement 12 years ago. He served as a Trucking Dispatcher for the Swain & Sons Trucking Company in Memphis in later years.  Mr. Filgo was a Methodist and will be remembered as a dedicated and valued employee who enjoyed family and friends and never met a stranger.

Mr. Filgo is survived by his son, George Alfred Filgo, Jr. of Memphis and his sister, Helen Rial (Robert) of Dickson, Tennessee.
