GEORGE EARL GOLDSBY, SR., longtime resident of the Braden Community, United States Veteran and retired sign builder died at 12:44 A.M. Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at the Veteran's Administration Regional Medical Center in Memphis where he had been a patient for five days. He was 85 years of age and died following a six-year illness.

A Service of Remembrance for Mr. Goldsby was conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, August 22nd at the Braden United Methodist Church with Rev. Wendell Smith, Pastor of the church, officiating. He was assisted by Dr. Jim Muston, Pastor of the Cordova Baptist Church. Interment was in the Burrow Cemetery at Galloway, Tennessee. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Goldsby was born September 16, 1923 in the Lucy Community of Shelby County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston Henry Goldsby and Willie Mae Tucker Goldsby.

He served in the United States Navy during the World War II Period and was married August 24, 1944 to the former Katherine Sue McKnight of Fayette County who preceded him in death on December 16, 2003.

Mr. Goldsby had been involved in sign building for over fifty years before his retirement in 1979. In earlier years he was employed by Arnette Signs and later established his own company, Signs By George Goldsby. The business continues today as Goldsby Signs, owned and operated by his son, Ken.

Mr. Goldsby was an active member for much of his life in the Braden United Methodist Church, where he and his wife participated in numerous church activities.

He was a Mason and was involved in the affairs of his community for many years. He enjoyed out-of-door activities and continued to receive much pleasure in assisting his son in the family sign business after his retirement.

Survivors of Mr. Goldsby include two sons, George E. Goldsby, Jr. (Sarah Bruce) of Dyersburg and Kenneth S. Goldsby (Cheryl Smith) of Galloway; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
