George Wayne Burch

George Wayne Burch, resident of the Williston Community, retired Fayette County Public Works Supervisor and husband of Betty Burch passed away Wednesday afternoon December 1, 2010 at his residence. He was 74 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Burch were conducted at 1 P.M. Saturday, December 4 th at Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. David Reeves of Somerville, officiating. Special remarks were made by his nephews, Danny and Cliff Lazenby, along with his daughter, Cheryl Burch Citrone. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery at Williston. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—West Chapel of Oakland.
A native of Fayette County, Mr. Burch was born December 18, 1935 in Williston. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Albert Burch and Mary Louise Jacobs Burch. He was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School, class of 1953. Mr. Burch was married June 5, 1955 to the former Betty M. Seward of the Eads Community, who survives. He served in the Tennessee National Guard in earlier years.
A lifelong resident of Fayette County, Mr. Burch served as a public servant including a volunteer Deputy Sheriff, the first Fire Chief for the Williston Fire Department and a member of the Fayette County Rescue Squad.  He also served on the Fayette County Public Works Board for 8 years before accepting a full-time post as Supervisor of Public Works where he worked until his retirement in 2006.  Prior positions included the Fayette County Board of Education and owner of Burch’s Grocery and Garage in Williston, TN for 15 years.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, Mr. Burch is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Burch Citrone (Frank) of Collierville, a sister, Oneita Lazenby of Williston and one grandson, Nick Citrone of Memphis.
Pallbearers included his nephews, Danny Lazenby, Cliff Lazenby, Richard Lazenby and Stan Forrester.  They were accompanied by close friend, Ray Seals and Williston neighbor Randy Glover.  Honorary Pallbearers were grandson, Nick Citrone; great-nephews, Phillip DeGraffenried, Mark Lazenby and family friends, James Mod and James “Lee” Styers.
