Ernestine Johnson
1920—2011
Gladys Ernestine Bobbitt Johnson, longtime resident of the New Bethel Community in Fayette County and wife of the late Cox Johnson departed this life Saturday morning, May 28, 2011 at her residence. She was 91 years of age and died following an illness of several months.
Services honoring the life of Mrs. Johnson were conducted at 2 P.M. Tuesday, May 31 st at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. James Wier of Pleasants Christian Church officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Harold Goodwin, a longtime friend and former pastor of the church. Interment followed in the New Bethel Cemetery near Rossville. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Fayette County, Mrs. Johnson was born February 10, 1920 in the Williston Community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas LaFayette Bobbitt and Mary Ellen Leath Bobbitt. Mrs. Johnson was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville where she excelled in Women’s Sports and was a member of the West Tennessee All Star Ladies Basketball Team.
She was married June 1, 1940 to Cecil Cox Johnson, a well-known Fayette County resident and active Masonic Lodge Leader who served as Fayette County Trustee for a number of years before his retirement. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker throughout her life and also served as a secretary and office clerk for the Trustees Office during her husband’s tenure.
She was a longtime devoted member of Pleasants Christian Church and was the oldest living member of her church at the time of her death. Mrs. Johnson served in numerous positions of leadership in her church that included being the first president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, church and community. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and a large variety of animals at the family residence.
Mrs. Johnson’s survivors include her son: Cecil Bradley Johnson of Rossville; her daughter: Nancy Kay Johnson of Memphis; her sister: Mary Miller of the Macon Community; her grandchildren: Sharon Williams, Jason Johnson, Jereme Johnson, Amanda King, Jenger Johnson; her great-grandchildren: James C. Walters, Kaitlyn Walters, Logan Johnson, Jasie Johnson and Gabriel King.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Jason B. Johnson, Jereme N. Johnson, James C. Walters, Jenger Johnson, Amanda King and Sharon Williams.
