GILLIAN MARIAN SMITH BATTEY, a resident of the Oakland Community and native of England died Saturday evening, November 14, 2009 at her residence. She was 73 years of age and died following a ten-month illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Battey were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday, November 19th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Michael Pence, Pastor of the Faith United Methodist Church in Oakland, officiating. A private family interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mrs. Battey was born June 30, 1936 in Oxford, England. She was preceded in death by her parents, Randal George Smith and Lorna Charlotte Johnson Smith.
She was educated in the United Kingdom and was the wife of the late Bob Battey.
She was a former resident of Cherokee Village, Arkansas and had been a resident of the Oakland Community for the past nine years.
A homemaker throughout her life, she was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church at Oakland and participated in the Community Bible Studies group.
Mrs. Battey's interests included reading, traveling, fellowship with friends and gardening.
Survivors of Mrs. Battey include her daughter, Holly Battey of Oakland and her sister, Jean Keene of Gorleston-On-Sea, England.
