GLADYS PAULINE CROSS POUNDERS BAKER

April 19, 1922 — March 12, 2009

GLADYS PAULINE CROSS BAKER, a resident of Somerville and former longtime resident of the Macon Community died at 6:55 P.M. Thursday, March 12, 2009 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where she had been a patient for one week. She was 86 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Funeral services for Mrs. Baker were conducted at 3 P.M. Sunday, March 15th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Ricky Burns, Pastor of the Williston Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Macon Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-West Chapel of Oakland.

Mrs. Baker was born April 19, 1922 in Red Bay Alabama; the daughter of the late Ode Cross and the late, Direalzie Fowler Cross. She was educated in the Alabama Public School System and moved at an early age to Fayette County.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Orville J. Pounders who died in 1979 and Stewart Baker who died in 2008.

Mrs. Baker was a homemaker throughout her life and in earlier years was employed by the Rim Con Corporation, in Oakland. She resided in the Macon Community for many years and had been a resident of Maplewood Village in Somerville for one year.

A Christian throughout her life, Mrs. Baker will be remembered as spiritual person with a deep love for her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and preparing meals and desserts were her specialty.

The last of survivor of seven siblings, Mrs. Baker leaves her daughter, Wanda Pounders of Memphis; two sons, Sherman Pounders (Barbara) of Hernando, MS and Keith Pounders (Lisa) of Williston; her grandson, Jeff Pounders of Oakland; her step-granddaughter, Melissa Koch and two step-great-grandchildren.

Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Richard Thompson, Thomas Powell, Keith Pounders, Sherman Pounders, Cecil Redditt and Robert L. Childers.
