Gladys Pearl (Black) Henley

November 9, 1923 — January 19, 2012

Gladys Black Henley, longtime resident of the Somerville Community and wife of Byron B. Henley died Thursday morning, January 19, 2012 at her daughter’s residence in Somerville where she had resided for a few weeks. She was 88 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Henley were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, January 19th at Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Dr. Clinton Buck of the Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Laconia officiating. Interment followed in the Old Union Cemetery at Laconia. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Henley was born November 9, 1923 in Saulsbury, a community in Hardeman County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilcie Wilbert Black and Lillie Ann Anderson Black. She received her education in the Hardeman County Public School System and was a 1941 graduate of Grand Junction High School. On October 30, 1942, she married Byron Boyd Henley, retired Western Auto Auditor, who survives.

Mr. and Mrs. Henley lived in various locations of the United States during Mr. Henley’s employment with Western Auto. After their retirement, they returned to Fayette County and had been residents of the Williston and Somerville communities for over 30 years. She was a devoted member of the Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church and will be remembered as a family-oriented person who enjoyed family gatherings.

In addition to her husband of 69 years, Mrs. Henley is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Ann Kirkpatrick (Bill) of Somerville, Janice Wiles (Harry) of Somerville; her son, Byron B. Henley, Jr. (Sue) of Cherokee Village, AR; three sisters, Margaret Hensley of Hammond, IN, Euline Roberts of Kingwood, TX, Mildred Camburn of Olive Branch, MS; three brothers, Wilbert Black of Memphis, Charles Black of Crown Point, IN, Byron Black of Hickory Valley, TN; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Joshua Wiles, Michael Cannon, Kyle Kirkpatrick, Jim Wiles, Donald Henley and Tom Henley.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, c/o Harry Wiles, 106 E. Marginal St., Somerville, TN 38068.
