Merle B. Shelton
1921—2011
Merle Barlow Shelton, resident of the Collierville Community and wife of the late Rev. Loyd T. Shelton, Sr. departed this life Saturday morning, February 26, 2011 at the Dove Health and Rehabilitation Center in Collierville. She was 90 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services honoring the life of Mrs. Shelton were conducted at 1 P.M. Monday, February 26
th
at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. The officiating minister was her nephew, Dr. Jerry Barlow, Dean of Graduate Studies at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Interment followed in the Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery in Memphis with special remarks given by her son, Rev. Loyd T. Shelton, Jr. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—West Chapel of Oakland.
A native of Macedonia, Mississippi, Mrs. Shelton was born January 8, 1921. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ulysses Barlow and Nora Bullock Barlow. Mrs. Shelton was educated in the Mississippi Public School System and was married April 20, 1941 to Rev. Loyd T. Shelton, Sr., longtime Baptist Minister in the Memphis area before his death.
Mrs. Shelton was a homemaker throughout her life and served the important role as pastor’s wife in the church communities where her husband served as a minister. She was a member of her son’s congregation, New Hope Baptist Church at Rossville, at the time of her death.
A devoted Christian, beloved mother and grandmother, Mrs. Shelton is survived by her sons, Rev. Loyd T. Shelton, Jr. (Dianne) of Rossville and Dr. William E. Shelton (Paula) of Greenville, N.C., a brother, W. G. Barlow of Petal, MS, three grandchildren: Dr. Jeffrey Shelton (Kimberly), Angela Sutton (Andy), Brad Shelton (Francie); three great-grandchildren: Colson Sutton, Campbell Sutton and Ryan Shelton.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Dr. Larry Barlow, Brad Shelton, Dr. Jeffrey Shelton, Andy Sutton, Campbell Sutton and Colson Sutton.
