Gurtis John Leatherwood

August 19, 1916 — March 11, 2008

GURTIS J. LEATHERWOOD, longtime resident of the Moscow Community and a farmer, cattleman and landowner in Fayette County for many years before his retirement, died at 6:50 A.M. Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at the Methodist Hospital of Fayette in Somerville where he had been a patient since February 25th. He was 91 years of age and died fifteen days after the death of his beloved wife and companion for seventy-one years, Juanita Tacker Leatherwood.
Funeral services for Mr. Leatherwood were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday March 13th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Wayne Hodge of Moscow and Rev. Howard Calvert of Wynne, AR, officiating. Interment followed in the 45 Cemetery on Hwy. 57 near Moscow. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home - Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Fayette County, Mr. Leatherwood was born in the Macon Community on August 19, 1916, the son of the late John Madison "Ode" Leatherwood and the late Mary Tommie Taylor Leatherwood, early residents of the Macon Community. Mr. Leatherwood was married October 21, 1936, to the former Juanita Tacker of Fayette County and he served in the United States Navy as a young person.
Mr. and Mrs. Leatherwood moved to the Moscow area at an early age and operated their family farm throughout their lives before retiring. Mr. Leatherwood was a member of the 45 Baptist Church and will be remembered for his gentle mannerisms and kindness to others. He was known for his love of agriculture and the rural way of life and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Leatherwood is survived by his daughters, Mary Ann Mercer and Wanda Kay Leatherwood, both of Moscow; his sister, Laura Phelps of Caruthersville, MO and 2 grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were family members and friends.
