Gussie Spicer

Gussie Cleveland Joyner Spicer, longtime resident of the Somerville Community and wife of the late Doss Spicer died at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville where she was a patient for five days. She was 96 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Spicer were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Ricky Burns of Williston and Bro. Gary Joyner of Moscow officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery at Williston. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Spicer was born October 5, 1916 in the Williston Community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Ancel Cleveland Joyner and James Zethra Woodard Joyner. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a lifelong resident of Fayette County and one of the oldest residents of her county. At the time of her death Mrs. Spicer had over 75 living decendents. She was the wife of the late Doss Spicer, United States Veteran, who preceded her in death in April of 1981.

Mrs. Spicer was a homemaker throughout her life and was of the Baptist faith. She was employed by Salant & Salant in Somerville from 1959 to 1977 and enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, flowers and skipbo card games. Mrs. Spicer will be remembered as a family-oriented person whose pleasant disposition endeared her to both family and friends.

Mrs. Spicer is survived by her daughter, Joyce Mae Spicer Marbry of Williston; two sons, Terry C. Spicer of Somerville, Daniel C. Spicer of Mooreville, MS; two sisters, Bertha Joyner Bobbitt of Macon, Birdie Bernice Joyner Bobbitt of Olive Branch, MS; three brothers, Wilbur Cleveland Joyner of Williston, Hillard Newsom Joyner of Palmetto Community near Tupelo, MS, Morris Lee Joyner of Savannah, TN; 16 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 22 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Doss Eugene Spicer and three grandchildren, William Thomas Butler, Jr., Connie Laine Spicer McCoy and James Clifton Spicer.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Tommy Ray Butler, Dorsey Spicer, Dylan Cannon, Carl Long, Duane Joyner and Tray Watkins.
