Hazel Hamil Givens, longtime resident of the Somerville Community and wife of the late David Doyle Givens, Sr., departed this life Tuesday afternoon, June 3, 2014 at the Erwin Health Care Center. She was 99 years of age.
Graveside Services for Mrs. Givens were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, June 8th at with Rev. John Michael Krech, former minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Somerville, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Givens was born September 20, 1914 in LaGrange. She was preceded in death by her parents, John S. Hamil and Lela Parham Hamil. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and continued her education to become a teacher. She was a longtime teacher in the Fayette County School System and the last teacher at the Ames Plantation one-room school in LaGrange.
Mrs. Givens was the wife of David Doyle Givens, Sr., a longtime educator and Tennessee State Representative, who preceded her in death. She was a past president of the Albert Sidney Johnston Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Givens was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Somerville and an associate member of the Greeneville, Tennessee Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Givens is survived by her daughter, Emily O’Dell (Joe) of Greeneville, TN; four grandchildren, Carrie Lee O’Dell (Benjamin Furgia) of New York City, NY, Leah O’Dell Gill (Brian) of Chattanooga, TN, Lindsey Givens Malone (Lynn) of Cleveland, TN, David Ladd Givens (Rebecca) of Lansing, KS; five great grandchildren, Megan Hamil Gill, Robert David Malone, Thomas Riley Malone, Austin Ladd Givens, Tristen Doyle Givens; two nieces, Peggy Summers Myers of Fort Pierce, FL, Patricia Ann Summers of Somerville; and one great niece, Lee Ann Myers Hill of Nashville.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Givens was preceded in death by her son, David D. Givens, Jr. and her sister, Evelyn Hamil Summers.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Brian Gill, Benjamin Furgia, Lynn Malone, Ladd Givens, Adam Hill and Rodney Wilson.
