Hazel Evelyn (Dunn) Hatcher

June 18, 1922 — December 13, 2013

Hazel Evelyn Dunn Hatcher, resident of the Oakland Community and wife of the late Joe Edward Hatcher departed this life Friday morning, December 13, 2013 at her hospice home in Cordova. She was 91 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Hatcher were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday, December 16th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Jason Sadler, minister of the Oakland Church of Christ officiating. Personal reflections were given by her son, Eddy Hatcher. Interment followed in the Oakland Town Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Mrs. Hatcher was born June 18, 1922 in Hickman County, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer B. Dunn and Rolpha O. Burns Dunn. She received her education in the Hickman County Public School System and was married July 25, 1943 to Joe Edward Hatcher, retired employee of the Memphis Area Transit Bus System, who preceded her in death September 4, 2001.

Mrs. Hatcher was a homemaker and in earlier years enjoyed working part-time in retail businesses in the Memphis area. She was a member of the Oakland Church of Christ and had been a resident of the Oakland Community since 1970. She will be remembered as a person with Christian values and devoted to her family and church.

In earlier years, she was active in the ladies Bible class of her church and also served as a volunteer at the National HealthCare Center in Somerville. Board games that included Scrabble and crossword puzzles were favorite pastimes for Mrs. Hatcher.

Mrs. Hatcher is survived by her daughter, Barbara E. Nelson (Jim) of Oakland; her son, Joe Edward “Eddy” Hatcher (Patty) of Cordova; two brothers, Lee Dunn of Millington, Guy Dunn of Centerville, TN; six grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were family members and friends and the family requests that memorials be directed to Shelby County Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 713 S. Mendenhall Road, Memphis, TN 38117 or the Oakland Church of Christ, 35 McCauley Street, Oakland, TN 38060.
