Helen Estelle Alexander Callicutt gained her angel wings at the age of 85 in Memphis, Tennessee. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family on January 26, 2025. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Helen was born on June 9, 1939 and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee where she graduated from East High School in 1957. Shortly after she met the love of her life James "Leslie" Callicutt and married in 1958. She and Leslie spent 67 years devoted to one another, building a life in Bartlett, Tennessee where they raised their 3 children: Jimmy, Cindy, and Barry.
Their home was filled with love and admiration for anyone who visited, often offering their swimming pool to family and friends, including numerous neighborhood and school children. She loved to host and had a ball watching children spend their summers swimming. When she wasn't hosting, she enjoyed thrifting and creating for teachers across the Mid-South. She proudly served as Mrs. Johnson’s “Room Grand-mom” at Bartlett Elementary for many years. You would often find her in the basement of her home, spending hours in her craft room making educational materials including letter puppets, the alphabet, and seasonal bulletin boards. She delighted in helping children learn and grow by way of her creative imagination.
In addition to her crafting, she cherished the time spent with her life-long friends, many of whom she had known since junior high. She treasured the multiple cross-country road trips she took with her childhood friend, Cindy Davis, with their trusty co-pilot Kimba. She loved playing and hosting Bunco games for her friends on Juneway Drive. She was an experienced traveler and loved displaying trinkets from her travels across the bookshelves in her home. She never missed an episode of Jeopardy!, and had fun in guessing the final Jeopardy! question. Her humor was subtle and witty, never skipping a beat. She had a knack for storytelling and wrote jokes for comedian Phyllis Diller. These jokes afforded her family to purchase beams that held up the foundation of their home, akin to how her spirit uplifted those around her.
Helen is survived by the love of her life husband, James Leslie Callicutt; sons, Jimmy (Sherry) and Barry; daughter, Cindy; granddaughters, Kayla and Hanna; sister, Naomi (Mike), nephews, Michael and Jeff; niece, Mary Anne (Joe); great nieces, Mary Helen, Kate (Joshua) and Casey; great nephew, JT; great great grand nieces, Piper and Hunter; and countless other friends, family, neighbors, and loved ones.
