HELEN DIANE KEEL CHILDRESS, a resident of the Oakland Community, longtime Postal Service Employee and wife of Alfred Childress died at 12:30 A.M. Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett where she had been a patient for one day. She was 57 years of age and died following an extended illness of several months.
Funeral services for Mrs. Childress were conducted at 3 P.M. Thursday, February 12th at Peebles West Funeral Chapel in Oakland with Rev. Loyd Shelton, Baptist Minister of Rossville, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mrs. Childress was born October 31, 1951 in Memphis the daughter of the late John Keel and Elsie Chapman Childress. She was educated in the Memphis Public School System and was a Graduate of the Kingsbury High School.
Mrs. Childress was a former resident of Memphis before moving to the Oakland Community sixteen years ago. A longtime Postal Service Employee, Mrs. Childress had served as a Mail Carrier for the Arlington, Tennessee area for a number of years before retiring one month ago for health reasons. Her career with the U. S. Postal Service spanned a period of thirty-three years and she will be remembered as a dedicated employee who enjoyed the friendship of many of those she served on her daily mail route.
Mrs. Childress was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing, cooking, out of door activities and caring for her pet cat.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Childress is survived by two daughters, Kathy Lowe of Panama City Beach, FL and April Blevins of Potts Camp, MS; three sons: Chuck Carman of Arlington, TN; Scott Carman of Oakland, TN and Jason Childress of Moscow, TN; two brothers, Martin Smithers of Huntsville, AL and Bill Keel of Searcy, AR and seven grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were family members and friends.
