Herbert Ray Walls, longtime resident of the Laconia Community, retired long distance truck operator and husband of the late Linda Gale Walls departed this life Saturday evening, March 30, 2013 at the Methodist North Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for five days. He was 84 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Walls were conducted at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, April 3rd at the Liberty Baptist Church near Laconia with Rev. Jim Whitley, pastor of the church, officiating. Special Music was provided by the church choir and Debra Dowdy Keyser, pianist. Interment followed in the Liberty Cemetery in the Laconia Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Walls was born January 23, 1929 in Fayette County. He was preceded in death by his parents, James O. Walls and Nannie Pulliam Walls, early resident of the Laconia Community. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and was married May 5, 1970 to the former Linda Gale Clayton. Mrs. Walls preceded him in death on November 12, 1989. Mr. Walls was associated with the trucking industry for much of his life and was employed by the Roadway Express Company in Memphis before his retirement in 1993.
He was a lifelong resident of the Laconia Community and was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church. Carpentry and caring for his cattle were things that Mr. Walls received pleasure from during much of his life. He also enjoyed dancing and in earlier years, swimming was a favorite pastime. He had a lifelong love of nature and outdoor activities. Mr. Walls will be remembered as a people-person who enjoyed the friendships of many and was known for his devotion to his wife, children and family members.
Mr. Walls is survived by two daughters, Emily Cifaldi (Jeremy) of Memphis, Amanda Reed of Murphysboro, IL; four sisters, Pauline Nix of Laconia, Janie Deckelman of Laconia, Bobbie Moore of Olive Branch, MS, Alice Ferguson of Olive Branch, MS; her brother, Teddy L. Walls of Laconia; and her grandson, Elliot Cifaldi of Memphis.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Jeremy Cifaldi, Mark Roberson, Christopher Ogden, Brian Dowdy, David Tubbs and Chester Pulliam, Jr.
