HUGH RAY DREWRY, SR., a resident of Memphis with extended family members in Fayette County and a United States Veteran died at 9:30 A.M. Friday, October 19, 2007 at the Delta Medical Center in Memphis. He was 72 years of age and died following a 4 week illness.



Funeral services for Mr. Drewry were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday, October 22nd at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Loyd Shelton, Baptist Minister of Rossville officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Hwy. 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-West Chapel.



Mr. Drewry was a native of the Walnut Community in Tippah County, Mississippi. He was born October 28, 1934 the son of the late Bart Sullivan Drewry and the late Mary Odette Hopper Drewry. He moved at an early age with his family to Memphis where he attended Public Schools and was a graduate of the Tech High School. He continued his education at the University of Mississippi and was a United States Air Force Veteran.



Mr. Drewry was employed as a warehouse manager for the Nabisco Corporation in Memphis for 26 years before his retirement 10 years ago. He was of the Baptist Faith and was an avid sports fan with a special love for football. He enjoyed vegetable gardening as long as health permitted.



Survivors of Mr. Drewry include the mother of his children, Birdie Raines of Southaven; his daughter, Anita Crumpler of Memphis; his son, Hugh R. Drewry, Jr. of Oakland; his sister, Anita Smith of Bartlett; 2 grandchildren, Justin Ray Crumpler & Stevi Brook Blalack both of Southaven.



Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Paul D. Shipman, Don Drewry, Phillip Holland, Nate Mallett, Justin Crumpler and Mike Cummins.



The family request that Memorials be directed to either the Shelby or Fayette County Chapters of the American Cancer Society.
