IVA DENER THOMPSON DOWNEY, a resident of New Albany, Mississippi and former resident of the Somerville Community died Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Graceland Retirement Center in New Albany, Mississippi where she had been a resident for seven years. She was 87 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Downey were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, January 1st at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Carl Meyer, Pastor of the Oakland First Baptist Church , officiating. Interment followed in the Mount Pisgah Cemetery on the Somerville La Grange Road. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Downey was born February 2, 1922 in Booneville, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andy Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Morrow Thompson.
She moved to Fayette County with her family at an early age and was educated at the Williston and Rehoboth Community Schools.
Mrs. Downey was of the Baptist faith and a longtime resident of the Somerville area before moving to New Albany, Mississippi.
She was a homemaker throughout her life and will be remembered as a lady with quiet, soft mannerisms. She was a family-oriented person who enjoyed quilting, gardening, preparing food for her family and special times with her grandchildren.
She was the wife of Alfred Aubrey Downey, longtime resident of the Somerville Community who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Downey is survived by two sons, Dale Hoskins of Somerville and Daniel Hoskins (Polly) of Hickory Flat, MS; her sister, Nancy Kee (Charlie) of Somerville; three brothers: Lee Thompson of Jackson, TN; Alfred Thompson (Shelia) of Selmer, TN and Wilmer Thompson (Velma) of Oakland; seven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Mark Kee, Mickey Kee, Jeff Hoskins, Andy Hoskins, Darrell Hoskins and Paul Grooms.
Honorary casket bearers were Kenneth Hoskins, Ben Thompson and Wilmer Ray Thompson.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Mount Pisgah Cemetery Association.
