Ione Roberts McCormick, resident of the Braden Community and wife of Rex McCormick, Jr. departed this life Thursday evening, March 14, 2013 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where she had been a patient for three months. She was 72 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. McCormick were conducted at 12 Noon Monday, March 18th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Ronnie Hughes, pastor of the Brunswick Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Germantown Road in Bartlett. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mrs. McCormick was born June 7, 1940 in Adamsville, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom C. Roberts and Burlene Sipes Roberts. She received her education in the McNairy County Public School System and was a resident of the Memphis area before moving to Fayette County 18 years ago. Mrs. McCormick was a homemaker throughout her life and in earlier years was employed by the First Tennessee Bank in Memphis before her retirement in 1988.
She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed sports, camping and outdoor activities throughout her life. She was a devoted supporter of the University of Memphis Basketball program and of the St. Louis Cardinals. Mrs. McCormick will be remembered for the deep love she possessed for her loved ones and the McCormick family expresses sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis for the care and respect shown to Mrs. McCormick during her extended illness.
Mrs. McCormick is survived by her husband of 17 years, Rex Leon McCormick, Jr., retired mechanic and employee of the Aluma-Form Company in Memphis; five sons, Terry Wood (Sandra) of Collierville, Dell Wood of Braden, Derek Wood (Debra) of Atoka, Mike Wood (Sherrie) of Atoka, Kenny Wood of Memphis; three step-daughters, Rhonda Smith (Bob) of Selmer, TN, Debbie Walker (Clark) of Counce, TN, Regina Brewer of Jackson, TN; two step-sons, Billy McCormick of Selmer, TN, Jeff McCormick of Jackson, TN; her sister, Joann Burke of Bemis, TN; her brother, Tommy B. Roberts (Mary) of Braden; 17 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and her beloved pet poodle, “Daiquiri”.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Tyler Wood, Heath Wood, Bobby Spillman, Mitchell Carter, Greg Roberts and Ryan Acuff.
