Ira Allen Cocke, resident of the Whiteville Community and retired General Motors employee departed this life Tuesday evening, December 17, 2013 at his residence. He was 77 years of age and died following an illness of one year.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Cocke were conducted at 3 P.M. Friday, December 20th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Rickey Burns, pastor of the Williston Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Cocke was born December 11, 1936 in Wynne, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Cocke and Katie Whittiemore Cocke, early residents of the Lambert Community in Fayette County. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a resident of Chicago, Illinois where he was employed by the General Motors Corporation for over 25 years. After his retirement, Mr. Cocke returned to West Tennessee and had been a resident of the Whiteville Community for the past 23 years.
Mr. Cocke was of the Baptist faith and will be remembered for his love of nature and outdoor activities that included hunting and fishing. He was known by his family and friends as a Bible scholar and received much pleasure in pursuing his family genealogy and history of West Tennessee. His quiet, gentle mannerisms were appreciated by his family and all those that knew him.
Mr. Cocke is survived by his son, Ricky Lynn Cocke of Williston; four sisters, Ruby Hamilton of Stanton, Peggy Feathers of Somerville, Gracie Treadway of Somerville, Martha Burk of Stanton; his brother, John W. Cocke of Somerville; and a large number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Ray Kee, Buddy Kee, Chris Burks, James Duncan and Daniel Kee.
