Irl Pennington Jenkins, Jr., age 78, resident of Saulsbury and husband of Gloria Smith Jenkins, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, September 14, 2016 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Jenkins were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, September 18, 2016 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Skippy Rowland, pastor of the Rocky Springs Baptist Church, officiating. He will be assisted by Rev. David Reeves, pastor of the Midway Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery at Williston. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Jenkins was born February 6, 1938 in Grand Junction. He received his education in the Hardeman County Public School System and was a graduate of Bolivar High School Class of 1956. He served his country in the United States Navy during peace time and was employed as a federal mechanical and custodial inspector and steam and refrigeration engineer before his retirement.
Mr. Jenkins was married September 8 ,1956 to the former Gloria Smith and they were residents of Moscow from 1956 until 2000, when they moved to the Saulsbury area. He was a member of the Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Saulsbury and enjoyed fishing, hunting, helping others and traveling around giving his testimony at AA meetings.
Mr. Jenkins is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gloria Smith Jenkins of aulsbury; his daughter, Cherry Jenkins of Oakland; his son, Anthony Jenkins (Kim) of Somerville; five grandchildren, Joshua Jenkins (Maribeth) of Somerville, Kaley Beth Cook of Oakland, Kristen Cook of Oakland, Zachary Jenkins (Brooke) of Somerville, Sydney Maybury of Somerville; and two great-grandchildren, Izaac Jenkins and Mattie Laine Jenkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Irl Pennington Jenkins, Sr. and Marcele C. Pruette Jenkins.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Joshua Jenkins, Zachary Jenkins, Randy Smith, Joel Francis, Rabbit Dixon and Sonny Jewell, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Floyd Rowland, Donnie Oliver, Sonny Jewell, Sr., Eric Cook and all AA members.
