James Farley Murphey

James Farley Murphey, Jr., longtime resident of the Somerville Community, retired Fayette County Rural Mail Carrier, U.S. Army Veteran and husband of the late Mary Louise Pulliam Murphey died Wednesday morning, September 28, 2011 at the St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. He was 89 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Murphey were conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, October 1st at the Somerville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Kendrick, pastor of the church officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Murphey was born August 10, 1922 in the Macon Community of Fayette County to the late James Farley Murphey, Sr. and the late Lucille Boswell Murphey, early residents of the Macon and Rossville areas. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System, was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville and continued his education at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
He served his country with distinction as a member of the United States Army Air Corps during the World War II period, receiving numerous commendations for meritorious service. He was married April 23, 1945 to the former Mary Louise Pulliam of Rossville. Mrs. Murphey served as Budget Director for Fayette County before her retirement and preceded Mr. Murphey in death on April 13th of this year.
Mr. Murphey served as a Rural Mail Carrier for the Somerville Post Office for over 27 years before his retirement. He was a resident of the Rossville Community as a young person and had been a resident of Somerville for many years. He was a devoted member of the Somerville First United Methodist Church, where he and Mrs. Murphey participated in numerous church activities.
He will be remembered for his patriotism and active membership in the Local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Known for his quiet disposition and humor, Mr. Murphey was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Murphey is survived by his daughter, Emily Murphey Akin (Ronnie) of Union City, TN; his son, James Farley Murphey, III (Patricia) of Ramer, TN; his sister, Mary Neil Hale of Albuquerque, NM; his brother, Joseph C. Murphey of Fairview, PA; four grandchildren, Scott Akin, James Farley Murphey, IV, Joseph F. Murphey, Molly Akin; and three great grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Molly Akin, Scott Akin, James Farley Murphey, IV, Joseph F. Murphey, David Boswell and Christopher Murphey.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Somerville First United Methodist Church, 202 S. East St., Somerville, TN 38068.
