James Leo "Jim" Swift, Jr., age 80, resident of Brighton, retired business owner and husband of Louise Marie "Lou" Younger Swift departed this life Saturday morning, March 9, 2013 at the Methodist North Hospital in Memphis.
Services for Mr. Swift will be at 3 Tuesday afternoon at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with visitation one hour before services. Interment will be private and arrangements will be provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Swift was born September 18, 1932 in Blytheville, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Leo Swift, Sr. and Mary Rilla Sides Swift. He received his education in the Arkansas Public School System and was married May 19, 1951 to the former Louise Marie "Lou" Younger, a native of Pleasant Grove, Arkansas, who survives. He owned and operated a demolition company for most of his life.
Mr. Swift was a Baptist in faith and enjoyed hunting and trout fishing. He will be remembered as a family-oriented person and was considered a "take charge" person. In earlier years, he played football in Blytheville, Arkansas and lived in the Millington and Memphis area for 50 years before moving to Brighton three years ago.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Mr. Swift is survived by his daughter, Jimmie Lou Free (Kenny) of Millington; his son, James L. "Jamey" Swift, III (Cindy) of Memphis; his sister, Barbara Emmons of Harrison, AR; his brother, Sonny Swift of Ravenden, AR; six grandchildren, Tonya Coleman, Melissa Swift, Kenneth Free, Jeff Free, Joey Free, Chad Free and nine great grandchildren.
The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the church, charity or organization of the donor's choice.
