James Astor “Jim” Hodges, resident of the Arlington Community, United States Veteran and husband of Carolyn Hodges, departed this life Monday afternoon, February 24, 2014 at his residence. He was 70 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Hodges were conducted at 11 A.M. Friday, March 7th at the pavilion of West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Forest Hill-Irene Road near Germantown. Personal remarks were given by Colee Joyner, Ben Hodges and Morris Johnson. Interment followed in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Hodges was born June 15, 1943 in Kegley, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob Astor Hodges and Zona Vernon White Hodges. He received his education in the Kegley, West Virginia Public School System and proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War Period. Mr. Hodges was employed by the Shelby County Government for over 40 years before his retirement six years ago. He was appointed by three Shelby County mayors to serve as Information Technology Manager for the Shelby County Government.
Mr. Hodges was of the Methodist faith and had been a resident of the Arlington Community since 1993. He was married February 4, 1963 to the former Carolyn Beavers, who survives. He had been an active member of his community and will be remembers for his patriotism and love for his country. He was the recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal and was known for excelling in everything that he was a part of.
Mr. Hodges’ many interests included home repairs, caring for his yard and being on his tractor. Baseball, football and basketball were favorite sports in earlier years and he played baseball with the American Legion team as a young person. He had served as President of the Bartlett Junior Pro Sports Commission for six years and was much loved by his grandchildren and family.
In addition to his wife of 50 years years, Mr. Hodges is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Joyner of Bartlett; two sons, Jaimie Hodges of Bartlett, Mitchell Hodges of Evansville, IN; three sisters, Garnett Ervin Hodges of Princeton, WV, Sally Fraetis of Princeton, WV, Sandra Lambert of Princeton, WV; seven brothers, Tim Hodges of San Diego, CA, Ben Hodges of Cleveland, TN, Mark Hodges of San Diego, CA Charles Hodges of Chicago, IL, Stephen Hodges of Warsaw, VA, Art Hodges of Princeton, WV, Doug Hodges of Chicago, IL; five grandchildren, Cleve Joyner, Rachel Joyner, Kyle Hodges, Andrew Hodges, Landon Hodges; and his great granddaughter, Harper Joyner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Cleveland Matthew Hodges.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the church, charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
