James "Jim" Porter Nelson

James Porter "Jim" Nelson, age 74, resident of Oakland and husband of Barbara Hatcher Nelson, departed this life Friday morning, August 12, 2016 at his residence.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Nelson were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday, August 15, 2016 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Carl Doyle of Oakland officiating. Interment followed in the Oakland City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Nelson was born June 17, 1942 in Spokane, Washington. He received his education in the Spokane County, Washington School System and served his country in the United States Coast Guard as a young person. He was employed with the United States Postal Service for 28 years before going to the Donelson Police Academy, graduating at the age of 50. Mr. Nelson served with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sergeant for 15 years before his retirement in 2002.

Mr. Nelson was a resident of Fayette County since 1973 and was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed fishing and working on cars in his earlier years. He will be remembered for his passion of working in Law Enforcement and with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Barbara Hatcher Nelson, whom he married January 17, 1963; two sons, Roger Nelson (Rene) of Memphis, Randy Nelson (Brenda) of Bryant, Arkansas; his brother, Stuart Nelson of Pasco, Washington; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Nelson, Sr. and Genevieve Porter Nelson and his brother, Ronnie Nelson.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Michael Nelson, Colby George, Chuck Pennington, Doug Davis, Ray Garcia and Ricky Wilson. Honorary pallbearers included former Fayette County Sheriff, Bill Kelley and Gerald Kelley.
