JANICE HATFIELD ELLIS

September 18, 1939 — June 13, 2009

JANICE HATFIELD ELLIS, a resident of the Somerville Community and wife of the late James B. Ellis died at 6:53 A.M. Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the St. Francis Hospital in Memphis where she had been a patient for four days. She was 69 years of age and died following an extended illness of several years.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ellis were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday, June 15th at the Graveside with Rev. Loyd Shelton, Pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church in Collierville, officiating. Interment followed in the Memphis Memorial Park Cemetery on Poplar Avenue in Memphis. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.

Mrs. Ellis was born September 18, 1939 in Oneida, Tennessee and was preceded in death by her parents Walter G. Hatfield and Leona Babb Hatfield.

She was a graduate of the Oneida High School and completed her education in Cosmetology Studies.

She was the wife of the late James B. Ellis, United States Military Career Person, who was serving as Sergeant Major and Instructor at Trinity College in San Antonio, Texas at the time of his death on October 17, 1984.

Mr. and Mrs. Ellis resided in various locations of the United States during her husband's military career.

She returned to the Memphis area after the death of her husband and had been a resident of the Somerville Community for the past five years.

Mrs. Ellis was an accomplished Artist and enjoyed both crocheting and knitting as long as health permitted.

She was a resident of the National Healthcare Center in Somerville at the time of her death.

Survivors of Mrs. Ellis include her sister-in-law and caregiver, Joan Hatfield of Hickory Withe; her sister, Jonelda Sheppard of Columbus, OH; her brother, Tom Hatfield of Ark, Virginia and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers: Harry Hatfield, Herb Hatfield and Walter G. Hatfield and one sister, Betty Shook.

Those honored to serve as casket bearers were family members and friends.
