JAYNE LEWIS BERNARD

October 11, 1923 — May 4, 2009

JAYNE LEWIS BERNARD, resident of Memphis and wife of the late Rev. Hal Gordon Bernard died Monday, May 4, 2009 at Trezevant Manor. She was 85 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bernard were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday, May 7th at the St. Philip Episcopal Church at 9380 Davies Plantation Road in Memphis with The Rev. Taylor Dinsmore and The Rt. Rev. Don E. Johnson, Bishop of The Diocese of West Tennessee, officiating. Interment followed in the St. Philip Episcopal Church Cemetery with The Rev. Terry Street, Rector of church, officating. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.

A native of Shelbyville, TN, Mrs. Bernard was born October 11, 1923. She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude Homer Lewis and Lavinia Yancy Lewis. She was educated in the Tennessee Public School System and completed her education at the Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

She was married Sept. 15, 1943 to Hal Gordon Bernard, later an Episcopal Priest and the Founding Rector of St. Philip Episcopal Church, who died Sept. 18, 1999.

The Bernards served St. Philip Church for a number of years before Rev. Bernard's retirement and during this period developed lasting friendships with friends and church members in Fayette County.

Mrs. Bernard remained active throughout her life supporting her husband's ministry and participating in numerous activities at her church and at Trezevant Manor where she had resided for the past nine years.

Mrs. Bernard will be remembered as a gracious person who was a devout Christian and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors of Mrs. Bernard include her daughter, Peggy Halperin of Pegram, TN; three grandchildren: Will and Jo Thorogood of Nashville and Amy Halperin, now serving in the United States Coast Guard.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Martha Jayne Bernard and Sarah Elizabeth Bernard.

Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Dr. Frank Adcock, James Ferguson, Jermaine Jamison, John Lucas, George William Thorogood and Jo Bernard Thorogood.

Honorary casket bearers were William M. Rosson, Lee Wakeman, Charles Leverette and Judge Freeman Marr.
