Jeanette Rose (Elam) Mills

December 26, 1915 — December 21, 2012

Jeanette Rose Elam Mills, resident of the Piperton Community and wife of the late Dr. S.M. Mills departed this life Friday morning, December 21, 2012 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. She was 96 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Mills were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday, December 27th at the Oak Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with Dr. Larry Dipboye of Oak Ridge officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by the Piperton Office of Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center.

Mrs. Mills was born December 26, 1915 in Pineville, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents, William W. Elam and Sarah Margaret Heath Elam. She received her education in the Pineville High School in Pineville, KY and continued her education in Union College in Barbourville, KY and Eastern State University in Richmond, KY.

She taught school for several years and after her marriage to Dr. Shirley M. Mills, moved to Memphis where she was employed in the Federal Reserve Bank until her husband graduated from The University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. Upon his discharge from the United States Navy at the end of World War II, they settled in Oak Ridge where she resided until 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. S.M. Mills, an Oak Ridge Dentist and U.S. Naval Veteran, who died October 26, 1993. At that time she moved to the Piperton Community to be near her daughter, Judy.

Mrs. Mills was a Christian and in earlier years was active in the Oak Ridge Womens Club, holding several offices in the organization before opening Jeanette’s Bridal House in her home. She was associated for many years with the Easter Seal Campaign and supported the Tuberculosis Association.

Mrs. Mills is survived by her daughter, Dr. Judith A. Mills of Piperton. She was preceded in death by her son, James A. Mills.
