Jerry Donald Magness, resident of the Macon Community, U.S. Air Force Veteran and husband of the late Liz Young Magness departed this life Sunday evening, May 12, 2013 at the Methodist Hospital in Somerville. He was 79 years of age and died following an illness of one year.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Magness were conducted at 3 P.M. Wednesday, May 15th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. David Reeves of the Midway Baptist Church in Whiteville officiating. Interment followed in the Macon Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Magness was born August 2, 1933 in Murray, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ory Weldon Magness and Mary Virginia Miller Magness. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and as a young person served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War Period. He was married May 3, 1954 to the former Elizabeth Mae “Liz” Young, a Somerville cosmetologist and beautician, who preceded him in death on April 19, 2009.
Mr. Magness was employed in earlier years by the Wonder Products of Collierville and the International Harvester Company in Memphis. He will be remembered as a patriotic person and a lifelong resident of the Macon Community. He had a love for farming and cattle and continued to be active in his farming operation until his illness. He will be remembered as an avid hunter who enjoyed participating in coon hunts. He was the owner of several coon dogs who were considered champions.
Mr. Magness is survived by two daughters, Sherry Ray (Roy) of Cedar Grove, TN, Cynthia Trimm of Macon, TN; his son, Jerry W. Magness (Liz) of Collierville; his sister, Bobby Sue Smith of Macon, TN; his brother, Miller Magness of Lexington, KY; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Dayton Ray, Cody Hillman, Mack Magness, Jim Rogers, Dennis Smith, David Smith and Nick Napper.
