Jesse Morris Davis

August 31, 1925 — October 18, 2016

Jesse Morris Davis, born on August 31, 1925, a third generation native of Fayette County, was the third of four children born to Thomas and Vera Davis.

He served in the US Navy during World War II with two years on the USS President Hays (APA-20), seeing action in the Pacific where he lost much of his hearing. He retired, with honors including two purple hearts, in 1958 as Petty Officer, 1st class from the Air Force. In the years after military service, Jesse worked at a variety of businesses including the Shelby County Assessor of Property Office from 1969 to 1973. He attained his state certified Assessors license in 1972.

Jesse Davis married Mable (Maxine) McCaskill of Holly Springs, MS in San Diego, CA during shore leave on November 24, 1945. They had two children, Donna Ann Katz (Ronald) and the late Ronny G Davis. He is survived by his wife of over 71 years, their daughter, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jesse was a 3rd degree Master Mason and 32nd degree Scottish Rite member and a lifetime member of the Shriners. He loved golf and hunting, relishing memories of hunting in Central America. Jesse and his wife were members of good standing for decades at local churches, starting with Beverly Hills Baptist Church then Bellevue Baptist Church and his final church home of Faith Baptist Church.

Jesse died on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Davis were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Dr. Danny Sinquefield, pastor of the Faith Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Faith Baptist Church, 3755 N. Germantown Parkway, Memphis, TN 38133.
