Jewel Nail

JEWEL CHAMPION NAIL, Somerville Community resident, Published Poet and retired Memphis Nurse died Thursday morning, August 4, 2011 at the St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. She was 97 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Celebration of Life Services for Mrs. Nail were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, August 7 th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Chris Pulliam and Rev. Matthew Watkins officiating. Interment followed in the Arlington Cemetery at Arlington, TN. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Nail was born February 4, 1914 in Booneville, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Jackson Champion and Willie Ora Shamlin Champion. Mrs. Nail later became a Licensed Practical Nurse and pursued her vocation in the Memphis area for many years. Mrs. Nail was married April 6, 1933 in Booneville, Mississippi to Fred Cecil Nail, Sr., retired Mechanic for International Harvester, who preceded her in death on May 6, 1989.

Mrs. Nail will be remembered as an avid traveler and her interests included flowers, vegetable gardening, quilting and writing short stories and poet. A person with a very giving heart, Mrs. Nail will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life and remained active mentally and physically until her recent illness.

A Christian and caregiver throughout her life, Mrs. Nail is survived by two sons, Walter Earl Nail (Beate’), Robert Clinton Nail, Sr. (Margaret), a special friend, Dean Higdon of Somerville, six grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Nail was also preceded in death by her son Fred Cecil Nail, Jr.; her sisters, Leona Bowden, Amanda Vivian Landrop, Ruby Mae Battles; her brothers, Charlie S. Champion, William L. Champion and Robert R. Champion.

Casketbearers were family and friends.
