Jimmy McGee, resident of Cape Coral, Florida, former resident of Memphis and Whiteville and retired United States Veteran career person died Saturday evening, February 4, 2012 at his residence at Cape Coral. He was 66 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. McGee were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, February 11th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Reverend Loyd Shelton of Rossville, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — West Chapel of Oakland.
A native of Charleston, Mississipppi, Mr. McGee was born March 25, 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents Amos Biver McGee and Elizabeth Melton McGee. He received his education in the Mississippi Public School System and continued his education during his military career. He was a Vietnam War Veteran serving his country in the Navy, Army and the Air Force during peace time and war periods for 20 years.
After his military career Mr. McGee was employed as an airline mechanic for Northwest Airlines in the Memphis, Atlanta and Minneapolis locations for 20 years before his retirement. He was of the Baptist Faith and was a resident of Whiteville and Memphis before retiring to Florida three years ago.
Mr. McGee was married August 24, 2002 to the former Suzanne Lee Haughey, a native of Battle Creek, Michigan and retired elementary school teacher, who survives.
His interests included flying of smaller private planes, fishing, boating, scuba diving, nature and all outdoor activites. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed sharing lifelong experiences with young people. Mr. McGee was an avid western movie fan.
In addition to his wife, Mr. McGee is survived by his four daughters: Kimberly Raley (Pete) of Bartlett, Keri Challen (Jon) of Avondale Estates, GA, Nicole McKinney (Rob) of Kennesaw, GA, Katherine Arnold of St. Louis, MO; his son: Michael Lynn McGee (Teresa) of Memphis; his sisters: Dorothy Mae Hall of Charleston, MS, Alice Jean Heath of Grenada, MS, Stella Louise Tranum of Hernando, MS; his brothers: David Lester McGee of Tillatoba, MS, Floyd Everette McGee of Coldwater, MS, Larry Wayne McGee of Grenada, MS; eight grandchildren including one “soon to be” grandaughter and one great grandson.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Brandon Raley, Mickey McGee, Bobby McGee, Marvin Hall, Tommy Tranum and Rodney Tullos.
