JIM "PATE" PAYTON MARKLE

December 24, 1912 — December 18, 2008

JIM PAYTON "PATE" MARKLE, longtime resident of Fayette County, retired Farmer and Salant Manufacturing Company Employee died at 5:10 P.M. Thursday, December 18, 2008 at the Haywood Park Community Hospital in Brownsville where he had been a patient for 2 days. He was 95 years of age and continued to live alone at his home in the Williston area until earlier this year.

Funeral services for Mr. Markle were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, December 21st at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel in Oakland with Rev. Billy Adair of Moscow, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Freddie Clifft of Somerville. Interment followed in the Hood Cemetery in the Warren Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.

Mr. Markle was born December 24, 1912 in Alcorn County Mississippi the son of the late Henry Jackson Markle and the late Vader Lee Johnson Markle. He moved at an early age to West Tennessee and was educated in the Shelby and Fayette County Public School Systems.

Mr. Markle was married October 12, 1935 to the former Linnie Culver of Fayette County who died March 28, 1992.

Mr. Markle was a Farmer in Fayette County throughout much of his life and in later years was employed by the Salant Manufacturing Company in Somerville, before his retirement. He was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church near Somerville and had been a resident of Ebenezer Loop near Williston since 1967. At the time of his death he was one of the oldest members of his community.

He will be remembered as a person who enjoyed coon, bird and rabbit hunting. Dogs and horses were an important part of Mr. Markle's life, trading and selling animals to his friends in the Fayette County area. A person known for his independence and love of nature and out of door activities, Mr. Markle enjoyed the friendship of people of all ages.

Survivors of Mr. Markle include two daughters, Iva Pattat (Richard) of Somerville and Cyleno Houston (Joe) of Hickory Valley; three sons: Gary Markle (Betsy), O'Neil Markle (Patsy) and Ronnie Markle (Teresa), all of Somerville; his sister, Melissa Taylor of Hickory Valley; his brother, Herman Markle of Memphis; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and two great-great-granchildren.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Johnny Houston, Tony Kirk, Nick Markle, Payton Markle, Johnnie Pattat and Bryan Shinault.

Honorary casketbearers were Harley Brown and Floyd Strickland.

The family request that Memorials be directed to the Shady Grove Baptist Church or to the Hood Cemetery Association.
