JOE BOYD BURNETTE, SR., longtime resident of the Moscow Community and a member of a family long-active in the agricultural and banking affairs of the area died Monday morning, October 19, 2009 at the Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital. He was 74 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Remembrance Services with Military Honors for Mr. Burnette were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, October 23rd at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with a friend, Mike McCaskill, of Williston, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. David Parlow, Pastor of the Oak Grove Baptist Church at Moscow. Interment was private and arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Burnette was born February 6, 1935 in Memphis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd Burnette and Mary Bertie Wheeler Burnette.
He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and as a young person served in the United States Marine Corps.
He was married September 24, 1955 to the former Peggy Smith of Fayette County who survives.
Mr. Burnette had a lifelong interest in agriculture and farming and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Bank of Fayette County at the time of his death. He had been a member of the Bank Board for over fifty years and served as a member of the Fayette County Court for twelve years.
Mr. Burnette was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed activities that included aviation, boating, water-sports and hunting.
In addition to his wife of fifty-four years, survivors of Mr. Burnette include two daughters, Lori Chancellor (Jay) of Brooksville, MS and Peggy Daugherty (Gaither) of Collierville; his son, Joe B. Burnette, Jr. (Michelle) of Moscow; eight grandchildren: Julia, Will, Trey, Ben, Whitney, Josh, Jake and Emma Grace and three great-grandchildren.
Honorary casket bearers were Jerry Baker, Robert "Bobbie" Collier, W. C. Dandridge, Sheridan "Lee" Earles, Robert Wayne Hurdle, Vip Lewis, Bill McClure, Bill McClure, Jr., Joe Parsons, Jimmy Dale Price, Reuben S. Rhea, Jr., William Smith, Ken Tidwell and H. McCall Wilson, Jr.
