Joe Henson Whitten

Joe Henson Whitten, age 91, resident of the Oakland Community, United States Army Veteran, retired mechanic for Signal Delivery in Memphis and husband of Charlotte Brooks Whitten, departed this life Wednesday evening, May 6, 2015 at his residence.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Whitten were conducted at 1 P.M. Saturday, May 8th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Ron Harvey, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Bartlett, officiating. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Whitten was born June 4, 1923 in Lepanto, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arlie LaFayette Whitten and Ollie Bell Henson Whitten. He moved with his family at an early age to Tennessee and received his education in the McNairy County Public School System and served his country in the United States Army as a young person. Mr. Whitten was married October 31, 1942 to the former Charlotte Brooks, who survives. He was of the Baptist faith and was employed for 21 years as a mechanic with Signal Delivery (a branch of Sears) before his retirement. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

In addition to his wife of 72 years, Mr. Whitten is survived by his daughter, Darnell W. Miller (John) of Love, MS; two sons, Joe D. Whitten of Jacksonville, FL, Michael Whitten (Anne) of Bartlett; his sister, Arlene Crow of Bethel Springs, TN; his brother Virgil Whitten of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Verta Lee Lofton and five brothers, Wendell Whitten, Raymond Whitten, Arlie Whitten, Jr., Frank Whitten and Coy Whitten.

Casketbearers were family members and friends and the family requests that memorials be directed to Grace Baptist Church, 3275 N. Brunswick Road, Bartlett, TN 38133 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, TN 38148.
