Joel Lee Hurst, Sr., resident of Linden, Tennessee, retired from the Memphis Police Department and husband of Wanda Minor Hurst, departed this life Thursday morning, August 21, 2014 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for four months. He was 77 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Hurst were conducted at 4 P.M. Monday, August 25th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Dr. Ken Culver, pastor of the Warren Community Church in Somerville, officiating. Interment will be private. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Hurst was born June 2, 1937 in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Jack Hurst and Martha Mae McClain Hurst. He received his education in the Shelby County Public School System and was married January 1, 1955 to the former Wanda Lou Minor, who survives. He was a resident of the Linden Community in Perry County for 25 years.
Mr. Hurst served as a Police Officer for the Memphis Police Department for 25 years before his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Tennessee Law Officer Enforcement Association and was a conductor for the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed outdoor activities that included hunting, fishing, horses, leathercrafts, boating and being on the water with his family. He will be remembered for his natural ability to be good at any activity he participated in.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, Mr. Hurst is survived by his daughter, Teri Hurst Farris (David) of Somerville; his son, Joel Lee Hurst (Cynthia Carroll) of Memphis; his sister, Carolyn Jackson of Memphis; his brother, Jack Wayne Hurst of McDonough, GA; three grandchildren, Samuel Joseph Hurst, Rebecca Lynne Farris, Heather Warf, Lloyd Alan Warf; and three great grandchildren, Katlyn Hurst, Naomi Hurst and Natalie Hurst.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas C. Hurst, Sr.
