JOHN J. "Butch" CLEVELAND, resident of the Oakland Community, retired employee of the Engineered Medical Systems and U.S. Army Veteran, died at 12:45 A.M. Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at his residence on Kyle Road. He was 59 years of age and died following an extended illness of several years.
Funeral services for Mr. Cleveland were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday March 1st at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Dr. Kenneth Culver, pastor of the Warren Community Church, officiating. Interment, with military recognition followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Hwy. 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home - West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Cleveland was born February 6, 1949, in Memphis the son of Barbara Jane Wiley Cleveland and the late John W. Cleveland. He was educated in the Memphis City Public School System and was a longtime resident of Memphis before moving to Fayette County sixteen years ago. Mr. Cleveland proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Period from 1967 to 1970. He was married January 12, 1985, to the former Christa Obinger, a native of Germany, who survives.
Mr. Cleveland was a member of the Warren Community Church and was an avid fisherman. His other interests included gardening, nature, wild life and taxidermy. In addition to his wife, Mr. Cleveland is survived by his sons, John Cleveland, Jr. of Horn Lake, MS, Bobby Lee Gregory of Simi Valley, CA, Steve William Gregory (Claudia) of Rancho Mirage, CA; his mother, Barbara Cleveland of Covington; his sister, Sue Wetzel (Bob), of Covington; his brother, Kenneth Cleveland (Carma) of the Fisherville Community and 2 grandchildren, John Cory Cleveland and Stefan Wilhelm Obinger.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Claude Lundy, Bobby Gregory, Steve Gregory, Clint Branch, Kenneth Cleveland and Taylor Branch.
