John Gregory Duke, age 66, resident of Brighton, United States Army Veteran and husband of Linda Smith Duke died Sunday morning, January 27, 2013 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett.
Services for Mr. Duke were conducted at 12 noon Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Interment followed in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Forest Hill Irene Road near Germantown.
Mr. Duke was born November 10, 1946 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry G. Duke and Mary Louise Nourse Duke. He received his education in the Louisiana Public School System and was a graduate of East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Louisiana. He continud his education at State Tech in Memphis and received his law enforcement certificate at Central Texas College.
He was married January 20, 1968 to the former Linda Smith, a retired school teacher, who survives. He served his country in the United States Army and was in the 11th Armored Calvary. Mr. Duke was a member of the Macon Road Baptist Church in Memphis and was self-employed as a civil engineer and construction supervisor for 30 years before his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed working outside, flowers and gardening.
In addition to his wife of 45 years, Mr. Duke is survived by two daughters, Linda McKinley of Brighton, Kathy Gambrell of Memphis; two sons, John Duke, Jr. of Oakland, James Duke of Los Angeles, CA; two brothers, Harry Duke of Houston, TX, James Duke of Lawrenceville, GA; and 13 grandchildren.
Mr. Duke was preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Meeks and Mary Leslie Duke.
