John Thomas "Johnny" Ferrell, age 58, resident of Olive Branch, Mississippi and retired United States Navy K-9 Policeman departed this life Saturday morning, March 29, 2014 at his residence.
Services with Military Honors for Mr. Ferrell will be at 2 Thursday afternoon at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland (10670 U.S. Highway 64, Somerville, TN 38068) with visitation one hour before services. A Private Interment will be in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Germantown.
Mr. Ferrell was born October 5, 1955 in Memphis, the son of Thomas A. Ferrell and the late Sarah Earnestine Ballard Ferrell. He received his education in the Shelby County Public School System. He served as a K-9 military policeman with the United States Navy for over 20 years before his retirement in 1999. He received a commendation from the United States President for his services rendered during the Persian Gulf Period. He was a former resident of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Memphis before moving to Olive Branch, Mississippi six weeks ago. He trained and handled all kinds of dogs with a special love for German Shepherds. He will be remembered for his devotion to his children and granddaughter.
Mr. Ferrell is survived by two daughters, Holly Amanda Ferrell of Saltillo, TN, Heather Rachel Ferrell of Saltillo, TN; his son, Josh A. Ferrell of Saltillo, TN; his father, Thomas A. Ferrell of Holly Springs, MS; two brothers, Jerry B. Ferrell of Cleveland, TX, Jimmy Ferrell of Olive Branch, MS; his granddaughter, Charlee Jade Ferrell of Saltillo, TN; and the mother of his children, Sonya Ferrell of Saltillo, TN.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Earnestine Ballard Ferrell, a native of Fayette County.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Fayette County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, c/o Linda Taylor, 16845 U.S. Highway 64, Somerville, TN 38068.
