JOHN DAVID HOWARD, a resident of the Oakland Community and retired United States Naval Career person died at 2:10 P.M. Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett where he had been a patient for one week. He was 66 years of age and died following a two-week illness.
Funeral Services with Full Military Honors for Mr. Howard were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday, February 2nd at Peebles West Funeral Chapel in Oakland with Navy Chaplain, Philip Sumrall of Chattanooga, officiating. Interment with Military Recognition will be in the Kaw City Cemetery at Kaw City, Oklahoma. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Howard was born November 9, 1942 in Nowata Oklahoma the son of Marjorie Martin Howard and the late David Walker Howard. He was educated in the Shidler Oklahoma Public School System where he graduated from High School and continued his education at the East Oklahoma University where he received his Bachelor's Degree and continued graduate studies.
He proudly served his country for twenty-one years in the United States Navy where he was a Commander and Naval Aviator. He retired in 1986 and was a resident of Cordova for a number of years before moving to Fayette County five years ago.
Mr. Howard was of the Methodist faith and will be remembered for his love of golfing and patriotism for his country. During his retirement years he served as a volunteer for the St. Jude Golf Tournament for ten years and also served as Superintendent for the West Tennessee Veteran's Cemetery located on Forest-Hill Irene Road at Germantown.
A proud American and a kind-hearted person who enjoyed his neighbors and friends, Mr. Howard's interests also included maintaining his "green lawn" and special times with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors of Mr. Howard include his daughter, Vallerie Bowman of Jacksonville, FL; two sons, John D. Howard, II of Centennial, CO and Matthew W. Howard of Cordova; his mother, Marjorie Martin Howard of Ponca City, OK; his sister, Nancy Parness of Kansas City, KS and numerous grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Military Personnel.
