John Dale "Jack" Mills, a resident of the Braden Community, retired employee of Consolidated Freightways of Memphis, U.S. Marine Veteran and husband of the late Marilyn Telford Mills died Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at his residence. He was 78 years of age and died following a six-month illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Mills were conducted at 10 A.M. Saturday, December 12th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Danny Berryhill, Pastor of the Wells Station Baptist Church in Memphis, officiating. A private interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Mason, Tennessee. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
A Lesterville, Missouri native, Mr. Mills was born August 30, 1931 to Harrison Alexander Mills and Edna Mae Gibbons Mills, who have both preceded him in death. After receiving his education in the Lesterville, Missouri School District he entered the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean War Period.
Mr. Mills was employed as a Truck Operator for Consolidated Freightways in Memphis for twenty-three years before his retirement in 1992. He was a former resident of the Bartlett and Ellendale Communities before moving to the Braden Community eighteen years ago. He was of the Baptist faith and in addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Fern Telford Mills and a son, Jay Mills.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Mills remained very active throughout his lifetime and enjoyed vegetable gardening and socializing with friends in his community and his workplace.
Survivors of Mr. Mills include four sons: Steve Mills of Lakeland; Doug Mills of Lamar, MS; Jeff Mills of Arlington and Carl Mills of Memphis; three sisters: Wilma McElrath of Athens, GA; Verla Fitzgerald of Lesterville, MO and Karen Latham of Bismarck, MO; three brothers: Thomas Mills of Arnold, MO; Jim Mills of Ellington, MO and Alan Mills of Lesterville, MO; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
