John "Freddie" Fredric Hooker

February 7, 1941 — April 13, 2014

John Fredric “Freddie” Hooker, resident of the Oakland Community, retired machinist and husband of Tessie Hooker, departed this life Sunday morning, April 13, 2014 at his residence. He was 73 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Hooker were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday, April 17th at the Bethany Christian Church in Eads with Rev. Furniss Harkness, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was in the Bethany Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Hooker was born February 7, 1941 in Memphis. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Fredric Hooker and Dorothy Price Hooker. He received his education in the Shelby County Public School System and was a graduate of the Collierville High School. He was married January 28, 1978 to the former Tessie Mae Cook, who survives.

Mr. Hooker was a member of the “Old Bethany” Christian Church and had been a resident of the Oakland Community for the past 22 years. He was a machinist for much of his life and before his retirement, was employed by the Ring Can Corporation and served as a supervisor for the Memphis Furniture Company and the Carrier Corporation. He was a resident of the Memphis, Collierville and Oakland areas for most of his life. He enjoyed outdoor activities that included gardening, fishing and horseback riding. Watching wrestling matches was a favorite pastime.

In addition to his wife of 36 years, Mr. Hooker is survived by his son, Jeffrey Wayne Hooker of Memphis; his stepdaughter, Cheryl Watson Freeman of Collierville; two stepsons, Mark Watson (Amanda) of Oakland, Paul Watson of Memphis; his sister, Darlene Hooker Sawyer (Tom) of Cordova; his brother, Richard Wayne Hooker (Bobbie) of Holly Springs, MS; 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Paul Hooker.
