Jonnie Leigh Mayes, resident of the Whiteville Community and artist for much of her life, departed this life Sunday afternoon, January 5, 2014 at the Bolivar General Hospital. She was 47 years of age and died unexpectedly of natural causes.
Services of Remembrance for Ms. Mayes were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, February 21st at the Graveside with Bro. James Smith, pastor of Good Hope Baptist Church near Adamsville, officiating. Interment followed in the Good Hope Cemetery near Adamsville. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Ms. Mayes was born March 20, 1966 in Cleveland County, North Carolina, the daughter of Johnny Lee Mayes and Mary Francis Russell Mayes. She received her education in the Anson Jones Public School System in San Antonio, Texas and was a resident of Texas before moving to Tennessee. She was a Christian and had a lifelong interest in art and painting. She was an artist for much of her life with a specialty in fabric sculpturing.
Ms. Mayes is survived by her father, Johnny Lee Mayes of Spartanburg, SC; her mother, Mary Francis Mayes of Nashville; two sisters, Pamela Bain of Oakland, Mary Pauline Mayes of Gaffney, NC; and two brothers, Scott Mayes of Bolivar and Johnny Mayes of Gaffney, NC.
Pallbearers were friends and the family requests that memorials be directed to Good Hope Church Cemetery Association, 678 Good Hope Church Road, Adamsville, TN 38310.
