Joseph Lee Sims

Joseph Lee Sims, age 81, resident of Somerville and husband of Sylvia Steward Sims, departed this life Sunday afternoon, June 4, 2017 at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

Graveside Services for Mr. Sims will be conducted at 1 PM Momday, June 12, 2017 at Gravel Hill Cemetery in McNairy County. The officiating minister will be Bro. Kevin Treadway of Somerville. Arrangements will be provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Sims was born June 6, 1935 in the Gravel Hill Community in McNairy County, Tennessee. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, retiring at age 57 as a Staff Sergeant. He was stationed in Southeast Asia in Okinawa, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam for two tours, Australia, Brazil, England, and his favorite place, the West Indies. Mr. Sims stated that he loved the culture, people with their British accent and the West Indies had the prettiest women. He was also employed for 22 years as an alarm investigator with ADT Alarm Systems before his retirement. Mr. Sims was a member of the Landmark Baptist Church in Somerville.

Mr. Sims is survived by his wife, Sylvia Steward Sims, whom he married September 10, 2010; his daughter, Joyce Yvonne Bennett (Mark) of Somerville, TN; three sons, Joseph Lee Sims, Jr. (Renah) of Moscow, TN, Lloyd Keith Sims (Donna) of Southaven, MS, Robert Carroll Sims of Mississippi; two brothers, John Henry Sims of Gravel Hill, TN, Gerry Sims of Germantown, TN; three stepchildren, Stevie Keenum (Cammie) of Southaven, MS, Johnny Keenum (Jennifer) of Birmingham, AL, Christy Burke (Wes) of Atoka, TN; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Edward Sims and Lula Mae Jones Sims; his daughter, Deborah Sue Bolden; and three sisters, Mary Ruth Smith, Nellie Hanline and Mamie Watkins.
