Joyce Avery Courtney, known to her family as “Maw”, age 71, resident of Oakland, Tennessee and wife of the late Freddie Courtney, departed this life Sunday afternoon, September 30, 2018 at her residence.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. Courtney was held at 3 P.M. Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Ed Nix officiating. A Private Interment will be held at the Fisherville Cemetery. Arrangements will be provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.
Mrs. Courtney was born November 3, 1946 in Bondsville, Arkansas, the daughter of the late John Henry Avery and Lona Mae Edwards Avery. She was married June 14, 1963 to Freddie Courtney who preceded her in death, and was a seamstress throughout her life. She was a member of the Fisherville Baptist Church and was active in her Sunday School class. Mrs. Courtney enjoyed fishing, reading, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Memphis Grizzlies.
Mrs. Courtney is survived by two sons, Bud Courtney of Oakland, TN, Randy Courtney and his wife, Elizabeth Ann of Oakland, TN; her sister, Melba Bench of Lepanto, AR; and three brothers, Jack Avery of Blytheville, AR, Hayden Avery of Trumann, AR and Jerry Avery of Cordova, TN. She also leaves five grandchildren, Wesley Courtney and his wife, Rebecca and their son, Waylon, Taylor Courtney and his wife, Cora and their children, Grayson and Boyce, Peyton Courtney and his wife, Emma and their son, Braxton, Chelsea Courtney and Jake Courtney.
The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Jude Memorial Giving, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
