JULIA KATHRYN THOMPSON COWAN, resident of the Somerville Community, native Fayette Countian and wife of the late Franklin Cowan died Friday morning, February 12, 2010 at the Methodist Fayette Hospital in Somerville. She was 96 years of age.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cowan were conducted at 3 P.M. Saturday, February 13th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. John Michael Krech, Pastor of the Somerville First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Special Remarks were given by a niece, Cindy Alford. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Cowan was born in the Laconia Community of Fayette County on February 1, 1914. She was preceded in death by her parents, Austin Thompson and Darthula Brannon Thompson, early residents of the Laconia Community.
She was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of Fayette County High School.
As a young person, Mrs. Cowan was employed as a Telephone Operator in the Somerville telephone office and was then employed for over thirty years as a Sales Person for the Cooksey's Department Store in Somerville before her retirement twenty years ago.
She was the wife of the late Warren Franklin Cowan, Fayette County Farmer, Land Owner and United States Air Force Veteran who preceded her in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Cowan were residents of the Laconia Community for a number of years where they were members of the Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
She moved to Somerville after Mr. Cowan's death where she continued to enjoy cooking, caring for her home and yard.
Mrs. Cowan served as a caregiver to her family throughout her life and received much pleasure from visiting with family and friends and also assisting those who were ill and confined.
A lifelong resident of Fayette County, she will be remembered for her concern for animals with a special love for her pet cats.
Survivors of Mrs. Cowan include her sister, Mary Lill Powers of Somerville; four nieces: Cindy Cooksey Alford and Dartha Lill Parker, both of Somerville; Marilyn Plummer of Idabel, OK and Sharron Robertson of San Francisco, CA and five nephews: Austin Cooksey of Knoxville, TN; Daniel Cooksey of Coppell, TX; Rex Powers, Jr. of Somerville and Jimmy Thompson and Wendell Thompson, both of Memphis.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Addison Alford, Daniel Cooksey, Ricky Parker, Randy Powers, Rex Powers, III and Wendell Thompson.
