JULIA PEARLE ABERNATHY KINNEY

March 6, 1924 — January 6, 2009

JULIA PEARLE ABERNATHY KINNEY, longtime resident of Whiteville and wife of the late Asbury Whitten Kinney died at 6:40 P.M. Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at the Bells Nursing Home in Bells, Tennessee where she had been a patient for sixteen months. She was 81 years of age.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kinney were conducted at 3 P.M. Friday, January 9th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Bill Sorrell, Pastor of the Whiteville First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Melrose Cemetery at Whiteville. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Kinney was born March 6, 1927 in McNairy County Tennessee the daughter of the late Orpheus Abernathy and the late Minnie Hill Abernathy. She was educated in the McNairy County Public School System and was married to the late Asbury W. Kinney, World War II Army Veteran, who died March 31, 2003.

Mrs. Kinney had been a resident of the Whiteville Community for over 50 years and was a member of the Whiteville First Baptist Church. Her passion was caring for children and she served as a devoted homemaker and child caregiver throughout much of her life.

She will be remembered for her love of food preparation and the large meals that she served to both family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who, with her late husband, attended numerous army reunions that reunited her husband and his military comrades that served in the 238th Combat Division in World War II.

Survivors of Mrs. Kinney include two sons, David Kinney of Whiteville and Charles Kinney (Teresa) of Bells, TN; four grandchildren: Kelly Bishop of Whiteville, Keith Bartling of Arlington and Richard Kinney and Austin Kinney, both of Bells, TN and one great-grandson, Keith Bartling, Jr.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley Bartling on May 11, 2008.

Mrs. Kinney's grandsons and nephews honored her by serving as casket bearers.
