JUNE ANDERSON PEAKS, longtime Somerville Merchant before her retirement, resident of Morrilton, AR and former resident of Somerville
died at 10 P.M. Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Riverview Healthcare Center in Morrilton, where she had been a patient for two weeks. She was 81 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Peaks were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, August 23rd at the Graveside with the Rev. Loyd Shelton, Baptist Minister of Rossville, officiating. Interment followed in the Hood Cemetery of the Warren Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mrs. Peaks was born December 19, 1926, in Fayette County. One of thirteen children, she was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Anderson and Elizabeth Summers Anderson. She was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was the wife of the late Lilbert A. Peaks of Somerville, World War II Army Veteran, who died in 1963.
A familiar figure in Somerville known to everyone, Mrs. Peaks was a merchant on the Somerville Town Square for many years before her retirement. She managed the Martin's Department Store and later purchased the business, changing it to June's Department Store that she continued to operate until her retirement.
A Baptist, Mrs. Peaks was a lifelong resident of Fayette County before moving to Arkansas to be near her family members. For the past three years, she had been a resident of Morrilton, Arkansas, an area where four of her surviving siblings reside.
Survivors of Mrs. Peaks include two sons, David Anderson Peaks (Terri) of Oakland and Donald Ray Peaks of Newport, AR; five sisters: Linda A. Riley of Charleston, SC; Sandra A. Adams of Plummerville, AR; Alice A. Hatley of Henderson, TN; Mary Frances Gaither of Bartlett, TN; and Joan Gilmore, who was also her caregiver, of the Knoxville Community near Morrilton; two brothers, Randy Anderson of Navarre Beach, FL and Rex Anderson of Morrilton, AR; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son, L. Alfred Peaks of Somerville who died June 10, 1997.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were family and friends.
