J.W. Freels, resident of the Somerville Community and husband of Katie Freels died Monday morning, December 5, 2011 at his residence on Armour Drive. He was 68 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Freels were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, December 7th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. David Reeves of the Midway Baptist Church near Whiteville officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the Hillville Community of Haywood County. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Freels was born August 1, 1943 in Haywood County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie James Freels and Suzie Bell Pittman Freels. He received his education in the Haywood County Public School System and was married March 29, 1963 to the former Katie Benard, a native of the Hillville Community, who survives. Mr. Freels moved to Fayette County as a young person and was employed for much of his life in the manufacturing industry in Somerville. He was employed by Salant and Salant Manufacturing Company in Somerville in earlier years and was later employed as a supervisor for the Memphis Contract Packaging before his retirement four years ago.
A member of Harmony Baptist Church in Haywood County, Mr. Freels will be remembered as a family oriented person whose interests included jigsaw puzzles, reading and western movies. He was a dedicated member of the Somerville Moose Lodge #2206 where he participated in numerous lodge activities. He received much enjoyment in caring for his “granddog” Theo.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Freels is survived by two daughters, Susan Logan of Somerville, Angela Parrish of Grady, AL; his son, Mark Freels, of Walnut, MS; four sisters, Edna Forsythe of Bell Eagle, TN, Alice Elrod of Brownsville, Francis Elrod of Whiteville, Barbara Kirkland of Hillville Community; six grandchildren, Tiffany Hawkins, Mark Freels, Jr., Carrie Freels, Shane Warf, Ryan Logan, Chelsea Freels; and six great grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Shane Warf, Corey Hawkins, Mark Freels, Jr., Stevie Benard, Joey Benard, Charles Elrod and James Kirkland. Honorary pallbearers were Narvis Benard and Randy Baker.
