J.W. Whittemore, resident of Pocahontas, Tennessee, retired painting contractor and native of Fayette County, departed this life Friday morning, January 3, 2014 at the Methodist North Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for one week. He was 50 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Whittemore were conducted at 1 P.M. Friday, January 10th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Don Hammons, pastor of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be private. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Whittemore was born April 21, 1963 in Somerville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Plez Whittemore and Lena Mae Johnson Whittemore. He received his education in the Oakland Public School System and was a lifelong resident of the Fayette, Hardeman and McNairy County areas. He was a self-employed painting contractor for much of his life before retiring for health reasons.
He was a member of the Trinity Independent Baptist Church and had a lifelong love of wrestling, frequently attending the wrestling matches in the Memphis area and on television. Fishing was a favorite pastime and he will be remembered for his devotion to his granddaughter, who was the love of his life.
Mr. Whittemore is survived by his wife, Vickie Whittemore of Somerville; two daughters, Angie Holloway of Pocahontas, Brenda Kay Whittemore of Pocahontas; three sisters, Alice Roberson of Somerville, Ruby Kates of Corinth, MS, Barann Busby of Somerville; five brothers, Ronnie Whittemore of Laconia, Don Whittemore of Somerville, Duny Whittemore of Rossville, Robert Whittemore of Rossville, Bobby Whittemore of Gallaway; and his granddaughter, Gracie Nicole Holloway.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the church, charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
